Doing good can also be good for your bottom line. If you itemize deductions, you can write off your charitable contributions, whether you give money to a church, stocks to your alma mater, or clothing to overseas relief efforts. But as is usually the case, the IRS has plenty of rules that can trip you up if you're not careful. Here's how to max out on tax savings when you donate to a nonprofit.

The Foreign Service is Hiring Vets
"After retiring from the USAF I was looking for a new career that would pay well, offer job security, and offer me the chance to travel as much as I did in the military. The Foreign Service is a division of the U.S. State Department that is responsible for American foreign policy and operation of our Embassies and Consulates abroad at more than 260 locations worldwide."

Show off Your Military Know-how at the Heli-Expo
Helicopters, once considered the realm of crackpots and adventurers, are everywhere in our modern world. From medevac choppers that whisk people to hospitals, to oil-rig taxis that take oil workers out to off-shore oil platforms all over the world, to logging helicopters that harvest trees without requiring destructive road-building in wilderness areas, helicopters are omnipresent. And the military reflects this trend, with helicopters performing many duties with every branch.

Five Things to Take to the Career Fair
A career fair is a great place to gather information about potential employers and make contacts that can lead to your first job. Here's some advice on how to make the most of your time.
    Networking for Veterans
We've all heard networking is a key job search strategy, but how often do we actually use our connections or extend ourselves to make new contacts? Luckily, the Internet makes networking a little easier. Several veterans' organizations have websites providing information on military reunions, how to locate old friends or news on current trends in veteran employment. You can connect with others by using Web resources to learn more about professional associations and their benefits to members, or by initiating an alliance with veteran comrades who understand your skills and have shared similar employment experiences.
Stimulus Act Benefits for the Unemployed
A number of provisions to help the unemployed are included in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), and here's a list of some of the major benefits. Offerings vary greatly by state, so check with your local unemployment office to find out what exactly is available to you. The ARRA funds a new temporary Federal Additional Compensation program that suggests states up the unemployment benefit $25 per week for the period beginning Feb. 22, 2009.

  • Stimulus Package to Increase Government Hiring
The federal government will need to hire an additional 200,000 workers over the next three years as a result of President Obama's federal stimulus plan and additional spending included in his budget plan. That may sound like a lot of jobs, but it's just slightly less than half of the 384,000 additional employees Uncle Sam already needed to pick up between 2009 and 2012 just to replace existing federal employees expected to leave their jobs.

    Why Networking Works
"I attended the TAP classes at the community center on Pendleton. During that time, I was pursuing business in networking marketing. That was an uncertain road. For terminal leave, I flew to Japan to visit my wife's family and connected with a friend for a potential job offer in Tokyo. That friend helped me compile my resume using a template from the Internet. He took me to an IT hiring agency. After the interview, I knew I needed to improve language proficiency and get a couple certifications."

Amid a growing demand for fitness professionals, many of whom report a high degree of job satisfaction, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the fitness industry is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations.

It You're Not Getting a Job, Get Interview Feedback
You know the feeling: That moment in the interview when you realize the opportunity passed you by. Or perhaps you think you're interviewing well, but you aren't getting any results. You need to figure out what you are doing wrong and fix it ASAP. But where do you start? Third-party headhunters and recruitment agencies often provide invaluable feedback when they interview you or send you on interviews. But how do you determine how to improve your interviewing performance if you're going it alone?
    Stop-loss Special Pay
Stop-loss special pay is a $500 a month compensation paid to servicemembers who have had their military service involuntarily extended under a stop-loss order since Oct. 1, 2008. Servicemembers currently stop-lossed will begin to receive an extra $500 in pay on April 1, 2009. This initial payment will pay eligible servicemembers for the month of March 2009.
Action Now = Tax Savings in April
Whether you have a good year, rebound from recent losses, or struggle to get off the ground, you may be able to save a bundle on your taxes if you make the right moves before the end of the year. Dec. 31 is the key date because that's when the IRS pretty much closes the books for 2008. Actions you take before then count when you prepare your 2008 tax return next spring.
